on loan from the Misalignment Museum: Computer Vision is a field of AI that is trained on a large subset of visual images, and can utilize bounding boxes to signal object detection and classification. They specify the subject’s position, class (e.g. “person” or “foot”) and a confidence rating (the number beside the class indicates how likely the AI thinks that classification is correct). Large Language Models are another subset of artificial intelligence that has been trained on vas...| Flickr
Although LLMs are increasing the productivity of professional programmers, existing work shows that beginners struggle to prompt LLMs to solve text-to-code tasks. Why is this the case? This paper explores two competing hypotheses about the cause of student-LLM miscommunication: (1) students simply lack the technical vocabulary needed to write good prompts, and (2) students do not understand the extent of information that LLMs need to solve code generation tasks. We study (1) with a causal int...| arXiv.org
We conduct a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to understand how early-2025 AI tools affect the productivity of experienced open-source developers working on their own repositories. Surprisingly, we find that when developers use AI tools, they take 19% longer than without—AI makes them slower. We view this result as a snapshot of early-2025 AI capabilities in one relevant setting; as these systems continue to rapidly evolve, we plan on continuing to use this methodology to help estimate AI ...| metr.org
