As defined here, these are people who do not have a degree in paleontology and do not have a paid job in this field. Since its inception in 2020, the Alabama Avocational Paleontologist Award (ALAP Award) has been handed out each year based on a variety of criteria. This award honors an individual or a group of individuals whose contributions to Alabama paleontology have been exceptional.
