The James Webb Space Telescope has captured this outstanding image of an Einstein ring. In this case, a foreground elliptical galaxy (bright, fuzzy object at center) is acting as a gravitational lens, which bends the light to reveal the background spiral galaxy. The spiral galaxy appears as an Einstein ring around the elliptical. Image via ESA/ Webb/ NASA/ CSA/ G. Mahler.Webb images an outstanding Einstein ring| EarthSky

This is the new species of moray eel hidding among mangrove aerial roots. Image via Hirozumi Kobayashi/ ZooKeys.A team of scientists has discovered a new species of moray eel in river mouths of the Central Indo-Pacific. Interestingly, this discovery has a peculiarity, as moray eels usually live in saltwater, not in estuarine habitats, that is, in places where rivers meet the sea. The international team of scientists that discovered the animal nicknamed this striking species after the god of t...| EarthSky

This image shows a long filament of solar material, erupting into space. It happened on August 31, 2012. The accompanying coronal mass ejection (CME) traveled at over 900 miles per second (1,500 km/sec), rippling out into the solar system. Note: Earth to scale, but Earth is not this close to the sun. Image via NASA/ SDO spacecraft. A much-larger CME in the year 1859 caused the Carrington Event, which manifested as perplexing disruptions in the technologies then in use, such as the telegraph...| EarthSky
View at EarthSky Community Photos. | Michael Teoh at Heng Ee Observatory in Penang, Malaysia, captured this photo of Sirius A (center) and Sirius B (a white dwarf on the left) on January 26, 2021. He used 30 1-second exposures and stacked them together to make faint Sirius B appear. Thank you, Michael! The brightest star in our sky, Sirius, and its white dwarf companion, Sirius B, are currently farthest apart from our perspective. The two stars orbit each other with a period of about 50 years,...| EarthSky
