In keeping with our 2021 theme of improving Day 2 Istio operations, the Istio team has been evaluating extending the support window for our releases to give users more time to upgrade. For starters, we are extending the support window of Istio 1.9 by six weeks, to October 5, 2021. We hope that this additional support window will allow the many users who are currently using Istio 1.9 to upgrade, either to Istio 1.10 or directly to Istio 1.11. As Service Mesh technology moves from cutting edge to stable infrastructure, many users have expressed an interest in upgrading their service mesh less frequently, as qualifying a new minor release can take a lot of time. Upgrading can be especially difficult for users who don’t keep up with new releases, as Istio has not supported upgrades across multiple minor versions. To upgrade from 1.6.x to 1.8.x, users first had to upgrade to 1.7.x and then to 1.8.x. With the release of Istio 1.10, w...| Istio Blog

Modernizing Legacy Applications Older legacy systems and legacy applications are crucial to a business’s functionality. So a common theme on the Internet about Debian is so old. And right, I am getting close to the stage that I feel a little laggy: I am using a bunch of backports for packages I need, and I'm missing a bunch of other packages that just landed in unstable and didn't make it to backports for various reasons. I disagree that "old" is a bad thing: we definitely run Debian stable on a fleet of about 100 servers and can barely keep up, I would make it older. And "old" is a good thing: (port) wine and...| Blog.

I finally did it! The new server has all the parts that used to be in my old gaming machine, but it has the same HDDs as before (because I'm too lazy and cheap to get it a 1 TB SATA drive and image it from the old drives). For some reason, one of the NICs on the motherboard is present in the OS and activated in the BIOS but doesn't light up when a network cable is inserted. Oh, well; it has two, so it's no big deal.
