On the last day of UX London this year, I was sitting and chatting with Rachel Coldicutt who was going to be giving the closing keynote. Inevitably the topic of converstation worked its way ’round to “AI”. I remember Rachel having a good laugh when I summarised my overall feeling: I kind of wish I could go into suspended animation and be woken up when all this is over and things have settled down one way or another. I still feel that way. Like Gina, I’d welcome a measured approach to ...| Adactio: Journal
One of the most damaging things science communication can do is exaggerate the implications of a scientific paper, theory or discovery - it happens all the time and I find it infuriating. Sometimes this hype is so bad that it's almost funny. My favourite remains the 2013 'Scientists Finally Invent Real, Working Lightsabers' from the Guardian - I just love that 'finally', as if saying 'scientists what have you been doing all this time?', but the reality was a couple of photons had been made to...| Now Appearing
The question of whether a tree makes a sound if it falls in a forest with no one there to hear it is usually ascribed to the philosopher cleric Bishop George Berkeley, better known in mathematical circles for his attack on fluxions as 'the ghosts of departed quantities'. Apparently he never said it. But I was reminded of it on seeing one of BBC News' entertainingly bad headlines. It read: 'It felt personal': Si King on avoiding Sycamore Gap tree felling site until now| Now Appearing
When I talk about large language models, I make sure to call them large language models, not “AI”. I know it’s a lost battle, but the terminology matters to me. The term “AI” can encompass everything from a series of if/else statements right up to Skynet and HAL 9000. I’ve written about this naming collision before. It’s not just that the term “AI” isn’t useful, it’s so broad as to be actively duplicitous. While talking about one thing—like, say, large language models...| Adactio: Journal

There’s this weird phrase “agentic AI” which looks weid. But it’s a sign for how bad the state of the bubble is: Software agents are a very old concept, they are simple systems provided with a target function to optimize that operate somewhat autonomously. This fits in well with modern “AI” systems who can be […]| Smashing Frames
