I called an electrician today to help me install smart dimmers in my home. For one of the dimmers, he tied up the neutral and ground wires from the dimmer to the copper ground wire in the wall. Is this ok (see picture)? When he first opened the box, he noticed that there was no neutral wire and then used a voltmeter to see if he can use the copper wire to connect to the neutral. After he concluded it was fine, he connected it and then just capped the green wire off (not connected to anything)...| Recent Questions - Home Improvement Stack Exchange
I am an ordinary person with absolutely no knowledge regarding electricity and how it works (things like circuits and such) and I never really cared before until now when I sense potential safety issues in the place I just moved in. I really hope you can explain things in a way that's easy for me to understand. I did some research about "ground" and "neutral" concepts and now I have a bunch of questions about safety. I'm in California, US. My apologies for the super-long post ahead. Basically...| Recent Questions - Home Improvement Stack Exchange
I'm rewiring my new-to-me detached garage. Garage is from the 70s but has a newer Siemens panel (previous owners added a hot tub). The feed from my service panel is a sheathed 4 conductor cable in buried conduit, but both ground and neutral are bonded on the neutral bar. I lucked out and have the 4c feed, so I can just add ground bars and get the neutral and ground separated per code, right? Here's where I'm a bit confused. I went to the service panel to just lay eyes on the same four conduct...| Recent Questions - Home Improvement Stack Exchange
The light switch in my bedroom is failing. The house is from 1947 so the wiring is old and all of the original electrical outlets are two prong. I'm assuming no ground is available near this switch, but I haven't taken it out to look. I see various switches for sale, but the differences aren't very clear and I'm not sure which one would be the best replacement. I'm also unsure what type of wiring I have (aluminum vs copper) and if that matters.| Recent Questions - Home Improvement Stack Exchange
