Some IPs never truly die. They rise from the grave again and again, the result of near necromantic product research and nostalgia cycles. The undisputed undead queen of the comeback is Strawberry Shortcake, wouldn’t you know? Asking someone to sing her theme song is a litmus test for how old they are—since first appearing on […] Source| Board Game Quest
Yet another mediocre Nintendo DS card game, I hear you think! That’s almost right. This time, I have some good news: it’s slightly better than mediocre, go fish—no wait, figure! It’ll be the last one, pinkie swear. Ultimate Card Games from Cosmigo GmbH looks like another bargain bin game, but by the time they got this out in 2011 (after first releasing a version on the GBA), I can finally but still a little hesitantly say that I like winning tricks on my DS. Contrary to 18 Classic Car...| Nintendo DS on Jefklak's Codex
After revisiting Clubhouse Games on the Nintendo DS to satisfy my craving for (mobile) (digital) classic trick taking games and digging deeper into the Nintendo DS’s huge library, I realized my mistake: I clearly undervalued Clubhouse Games—and perhaps even the PC granddaddy of card gaming Hoyle Card Games. Especially by putting those two games in context of the more obscure DS card games like this one. I rectified the mistake by upping the score. So what’s up whit 18 Classic Card Games...| Nintendo DS on Jefklak's Codex
Clubhouse Games/42 All-Time Classics: Trick Taking On The Go. As part of my digital trick taking craving, after being done with Sierra’s funky opponents in Hoyle Card Games, I suddenly remembered the possibility to play Hearts on the Nintendo DS thanks to 42 All-Time Classics (the name of my PAL copy) or Clubhouse Games (for some reason the name to the rest of the world?). Let’s see how this game collection, this time not limited to just card games, still holds up twenty years later. Hint...| jefklakscodex.com
Hoyle Card Games (2002 Edition). I’ve been craving some good old-fashioned card game action lately—the kind that is best enjoyed with four players around a table and a standard deck of 52 cards. Since that’s not always an option, there’s the computer and a (dumb) AI for you to keep you busy and to learn the ropes of various new trick taking games I wasn’t yet familiar with. One of those collections is the then-popular Hoyle Card Games collection from Sierra On-Line that had a great ...| jefklakscodex.com

Al Cabohne: Bohnanzing By Yourself. Bohnanza is probably my favourite chaotic multiplayer card game by my favourite designer Uwe Rosenberg. Bean planting isn’t the most exciting part—the fierce bidding wars and possibilities to cheat when the opponents aren’t looking is. We’ve had ample Bohnanza sessions devolve into yelling and slamming cards on the table. It’s a classic three player or more game that everyone knows and loves, and that was treated with ample expansions and alternat...| jefklakscodex.com
Kingdom Legacy: Rip & Tear, Feudal Style. I’m not too familiar with “legacy” board games: I’ve only played half the campaign of a Pandemic Legacy game, and yes we did some wild stickering on the map of Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion, that wasn’t as radical as permanently ripping up cards as Kingdom Legacy instructs you to do. Which turned out to be a lot of fun, actually! Sure, you can also store them somewhere else for another playthrough, but since the game is very cheap (€14), wh...| jefklakscodex.com

Floppy Knights: Play Your Floppies (And Cards) Right. When I read Rock Paper Shotgun’s Floppy Knights verdict (a joyful card game that offers more the longer you play), I was immediately sold: a card game (check), a turn-based strategy (check), and something with old-skool floppies? (double-check) The question is: will my brain happily accept this floppy, or will it produce a sector error? Via Jefklak's Codex| jefklakscodex.com

It’s amazing to think that the base Race For The Galaxy (or just RFTG) game is 18 years old by now. Almost twenty years later, I still think RFTG is one of the best—if not thé best—tableau builder card games ever created. My love for heavy card play and the happy memories of many RFTG sessions will definitely have something to do with it, although the fast and tight gameplay speaks for itself. Let’s first get the worst out of the way: the biggest hurdle you will have to take if you w...| Boardgames on Jefklak's Codex

I am someone who has backed arguably far too many board games through crowdfunding. I find joy in large boxes packed full of plastic miniatures or sleeved cards, and hearing things like “complex” and “takes all day to play” makes me salivate. But I still have a soft spot for smaller and more party-tailored games for those times you just need that quick hit of board game goodness or are with a group of folks that aren’t quite as deep or interested in the hobby and are just looking fo...| Irrational Passions
Trading card games like Magic: The Gathering, Digimon, Final Fantasy, and others are perhaps my favorite genre of tabletop goodness. Being a child of the late ’80s and growing up in the ’90s, I attribute this love to my fond memories of “attempting” to play Magic with my older brother and dad at the time and playing matches with my friends on Boy Scout camping trips. It’s a passion that has stayed with me and evolved over the course of now three decades, and it’s what keeps me alw...| Irrational Passions
