For decades, the phrase “Year of the Linux Desktop” has been tossed around like a tech industry punchline. But now, it’s no longer a meme—it’s a movement. According to the U.S. government’s own analytics, GNU/Linux has officially crossed the 6% threshold in desktop usage. That’s not hype. That’s hard data. Welcome back! In our last update, we mentioned a fix in pureos-meta for some missing essential system components. This seemed trivial at the time - just add the missing components. However, when the fix went into review and we looked deeper, it turned out to be anything but trivial. The post PureOS Crimson Development Report: July 2025 appeared first on Purism.| Purism

As Purism has been saying for years, the battleground for digital privacy has shifted squarely into our pockets in the form of smartphones. Mobile devices are now (more than ever) the prime targets for sophisticated cyber threats, having a duopoly with centralized control from two vendors; Apple and Google; the problem gets exacerbated. The recent Microsoft SharePoint breach is yet another stark reminder of the systemic vulnerabilities embedded in our overreliance on monolithic tech ecosystems. When you centralize critical infrastructure—especially within sprawling platforms like SharePoint—you create a single, oversized attack surface that adversaries can exploit with devastating precision. This wasn’t just a technical failure; it was a cultural one. The post SharePoint Zero-Day Breach Hits Hundreds of Companies, Affe...| Purism
In a major move that underscores rising global concern over Big Tech power, Germany’s Federal Cartel Office (FCO) has officially designated Microsoft as having "paramount significance for competition across markets." This rare designation opens the door for closer scrutiny and intervention by German regulators—especially around Microsoft’s growing role in artificial intelligence and its tightly woven ecosystem of services. Thanks for tuning in! Like in March, we have a number of updates for April. We've been working up the stack to finalize the remaining packages that make up the PureOS Crimson release. While that is ongoing, we've also made more fixes and reliability improvements to the Linux kernel used in the Librem 5. These changes benefit both PureOS Crimson and existing installations on PureOS Byzantium. The post PureOS Crimson Development Report: April 2025 appeared first on Purism.| Purism

Building on my work to rebuild Trisquel GNU/Linux 11.0 aramo, it felt simple to generalize the tooling to any two apt-repository pairs and I’ve created debdistreproduce as a template-project for doing this through the infrastructure of GitLab CI/CD and meanwhile even set up my own gitlab-runner on spare hardware. I’ve brought over reproduce/trisquel to using debdistreproduce as well, and archived the old reproduce-trisquel project.| Simon Josefsson's blog

I’m migrating some self-hosted virtual machines to Trisquel, and noticed that Trisquel does not offer cloud-images similar to the Debian Cloud and Ubuntu Cloud images. Thus my earlier approach based on virt-install --cloud-init and cloud-localds does not work with Trisquel.
