Responding to a post-pandemic spike in disruptive incidents and discipline problems in schools, several states have enacted or considered new laws that clear the way for more and longer suspensions, among other tough punishments. This is a reversal from recent years, when many districts replaced “zero tolerance” policies with restorative justice and counseling.
