Jackson Square contains the city's only-surviving early commercial area, with well-built Gold Rush-era buildings that escaped destruction from serious fires in the 1850s and after, and from major earthquakes that struck the city between 1868 and 1906. What is today called the Hotaling Building at 451 Jackson Street (SF Landmark no. 12) is perhaps one of the district's most famous survivors.
