On 19 July 2024, Chantha was charged with “fraud” and “conducting activities causing misapprehension with the discharge of public functions” under Articles 377-378 and 610 of the Criminal Code respectively. On 9 December 2024, Chantha was sentenced to 18 months in prison by the Svay Rieng Provincial Court. Chantha filed an appeal against this decision on 23 December. As of today, Chantha has been in pre-trial detention for one year.
