On April 10, 1981, a caravan captured the attention of Costa Rica. It traveled from the border with Nicaragua to the city of Alajuela, where it would deliver the remains of the heroes of a war that had been fought more than a century earlier, among them those of Juan Santamaría, one of the most important symbols of Costa Rican identity. That arrival was portrayed as a celebration, but it ended up being an embarrassment.
