In section six of the second Enquiry (The Enquiry Concerning the Principle of Morals (1751)), Hume claims that “all the qualities, useful to the possessor, are approved of.” Here by ‘qualities’ Hume means enduring features of one’s character (also sometimes ‘a virtue’).
