In A Memoir Pierre Salinger, press secretary to President John F. Kennedy and campaign manager for Robert F. Kennedy’s 1968 presidential campaign, wrote that when the Soviets asked President Kennedy why he was not moving faster to improve relations between the two countries, Kennedy replied: “You don’t understand the US. If I move too rapidly, I’ll either be put in an insane asylum or be killed.”
