Canadian singer and songwriter Gordon Lightfoot wrote “Early Morning Rain” in 1964. It was released by Peter, Paul, and Mary in 1965. Lightfoot released it in 1966. When I ushered at the concert hall on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis in the 1970s, Lightfoot performed a number of times.
