Los Angeles CA (SPX) Sep 30, 2025 With repeated strikes of a 10-pound (4.5-kilogram) sledgehammer, a team of NASA-supported researchers has demonstrated a low-tech but powerful method to locate caves that may one day provide shelter for astronauts on the Moon and Mars. The experiments, conducted near Flagstaff, Arizona, and Tulelake, California, used terrain with geologic features similar to those of planetary lava fields.
