Gilbert Nicholls is largely unknown today, but in his time (the early 1900s) he was an important pro on the fledgling American golf scene. He won tournaments, twice was runner-up in early U.S. Opens (and once held that tournament's 18-hole scoring record), and helped steer the policies of the early PGA of America.
