The Lagoon Nebula (Messier 8, NGC 6523) is a large emission nebula located 4,100 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius. With an apparent magnitude of 4.6 and an apparent size of 90 by 40 arcminutes, it is the brightest and largest nebula in this region of the sky.
