Summer, sometimes referred to as A Portrait, was created in 1876 by French painter and printmaker James Tissot (Fig. 1). Tissot was born on October 15, 1836 in Nantes, France into a family of textile merchants. Twenty years later, around 1856, Tissot moved to Paris to study under Louis Lamothe and Hippolyte Flandrin.
