The idea that science and religion are enemies is a most unfortunate and misleading result of some of what happened during the widespread discussion of evolutionary theory. There were leading scientists who opposed Darwin’s theory, and there were leading churchmen who sided with them. On the whole, as scientific opposition faded, so did that of the mainstream churches.
