As National Suicide Prevention Month comes to a close, it’s important to recognize that the issue of youth suicide doesn’t go away when September ends. Nationally, the suicide rate among persons aged 10 to 24 increased 57.4%, from 6.8 per 100,000 in 2007 to 10.7 in 2018. Just under 7,000 people ages 10 to 24 died by suicide in 2018. On October 28, a consortium of legal and public health experts organized by the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence released a detailed set of recommendations to improve and enhance the effectiveness of the state-based gun violence prevention policy known as extreme risk protection orders (ERPOs).| Bloomberg American Health Initiative
When the Consortium for Risk-Based Firearm Policy was first conceptualizing ERPOs, we modeled them on domestic violence restraining orders, or DVROs, as they exist in all 50 states. The difference is that ERPOs are one-hundred percent about access to firearms, whereas domestic violence restraining or protective orders offer a wider range of protection.
