Remember our tutorial a few posts ago on how to build a built-in utensil divider for your silverware drawer? Ya know, this one? Well, having my utensil divider built-in to my drawer has rocked my world. So much, in fact, that I made a special trip to Home Depot to buy more melamine so that TJ could help me tackle my dreaded junk drawer.| JRL Woodworking | Free Furniture Plans and Woodworking Tips
I have a slight obsession with organization. Lately, I've felt the need to finally cross of a couple of projects that have been on my to-do list TJ's honey-do list. One of them was the silverware drawer, one is the cookie sheet cupboard (tutorial coming soon!), and then one was towel hooks for our bathrooms.| JRL Woodworking | Free Furniture Plans and Woodworking Tips
Don't you hate those cheap plastic utensil inserts that go in your utensil drawer? They slide around every time you open the drawer and never fit quite right because they typically are one-size-fits-all. They are usually too shallow and you aren't able to fit very many utensils in each divider. They also never look custom because they do not match the material of the inside of the drawer. Most of all, they are ugly! Well, we decided to build a custom utensil divider to match the melamine ...| JRL Woodworking | Free Furniture Plans and Woodworking Tips

Over the Christmas break, and mostly during my recovery from my surgery, TJ decided to start this woodworking website. He’s wanted to do it for awhile and he just decided to do it. He thought it would be so fun to do tutorials and share plans for all the things he has built in the past and for future projects we do. I decided to take advantage of his new website and give him a project to build. I drew up my vision - an upholstered headboard and bed frame with tufted fabric, researched o...| JRL Woodworking | Free Furniture Plans and Woodworking Tips
As you get started with woodworking, it is important to note that the "nominal" sizes for the lumber are actually different than their actual sizes. You often hear a stud referred to as a 2x4, which means it was 2 inches by 4 inches at one time. The reason they refer to lumber by their nominal size is because that is the size the wood was when it was cut at the lumber mill. That does not take into account the shrinkage that happens to the wood when it is dried and the material that is remove...| JRL Woodworking | Free Furniture Plans and Woodworking Tips

First, I would definitely recommend borrowing tools as you are getting started. Everyone knows somebody with some power tools. Nearly every family has a circular saw and you can certainly bum some tools off of close family members, co-workers or friends. So my first suggestions would be to not buy power tools until you've decided woodworking is right for you!Power tools are a big investment. I acquired my first tools a little at a time. In fact, we borrowed (we still have them after seven yea...| JRL Woodworking | Free Furniture Plans and Woodworking Tips
The above picture is a 3-foot beadboard and batten wall shelf (the plans below are for the 4-foot wall shelf). This is very beautiful with a glaze finish and it is fairly simple and cheap to make. The project is very similar to the classic beadboard shelf with a few minor changes such as vertical battens and crown. The details of the project don't require a lot of material, but they do require some tools. | JRL Woodworking | Free Furniture Plans and Woodworking Tips
We built this beautiful headboard for our daughter’s twin size bed. The beadboard headboard with a crown molding cap was our first official woodworking project. We only had a cheap miter saw and a borrowed circular saw.| JRL Woodworking | Free Furniture Plans and Woodworking Tips
It was in April of 2007 that we decided to build a home. We didn't spend much time looking at floor plans because we fell in love instantly with the floor plan we chose. One of our favorite features was the great room that opens up to the kitchen. The stairway to the basement is also in the great room and it serves as a sort of divider for the entry way and great room.| JRL Woodworking | Free Furniture Plans and Woodworking Tips

Now this may seem like common sense, but for the novice woodworker, this tip could prove invaluable. When doing a project that involves many cuts from the same sheet or piece of wood, it is a good idea to cut out all the largest pieces first and then move on to the smaller pieces. This will ensure that there is enough material for the larger pieces. The smaller pieces are easier to make work with the scraps from the large cuts.| JRL Woodworking | Free Furniture Plans and Woodworking Tips
