Previous edit: February 29, 2020 The EasyPup project is retired. The last release was version 2.5.1, on December 4, 2020. The currently active project is EasyOS, see easyos.org EasyPup is a blend of "classical Puppy" with EasyOS. EasyOS originally derived from Puppy, but is a complete redesign, based on use of containers. EasyPup may be considered as a traditional Puppy, but with many enhancements of EasyOS, sans container support. Regarding the "Puppy part" of EasyPup, EasyPup is built with ...| BarryK's Home
EasyOS, also known as Easy OS, Easy Linux, or just "Easy", is an experimental distribution, a "new paradigm"; a blend of the best ideas from Puppy and Quirky, and a fundamental rethink of the security, maintainability and ease-of-use. Easy has his own website: https://easyos.org/ There is also a forum: https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewforum.php?f=63 Barry posts the latest news about EasyOS to his blog: https://bkhome.org/news/tag_easy.html Have fun! Page first written June 5, 2021 Early this year (2021), I went for a hike with only a Mountainsmith Daylight Lumbar Pack. Blog post: https://bkhome.org/news/202102/waist-pack-hiking-test-2021.html I was carrying about 4.5kg, including weight of the lumbar pack, which was a bit too much. Since then, I have been reconsidering my gear, aiming to get the weight down to about 3.5kg. As part of that exercise, I decided to make my own tent. Yes, I want an extremely light weight tent, but also some c...| BarryK's Home
EasyDD is an application for writing an operating system image file to a drive. Typically, this might be something like writing file 'debian-1.2.3.img.gz' (for example) to an SD-card for a RaspberryPi board, to a USB-stick for a desktop PC or laptop, or for any other board or computer. EasyDD is a simple bash script, capable of running in either CLI (commandline) mode or GUI (graphical) mode. In CLI mode it will run on any Linux OS, as it only uses utilities such as 'grep', 'sed', 'dd' and 'g...| BarryK's Home
This is a project to build a battery box that is charged from either a solar photovoltaic panel or via the vehicle alternator. I refer to it as a "powerbox". There are many ready-made powerboxes, from highly portable intended for occasional camping trips, that charge from the vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket (as well as solar), to the more permanent-but-still-removable "hard-core" type, that are wired to the vehicle battery. There are a lot of ready-made powerboxes to choose from on the Aus...| BarryK's Home
By Barry Kauler Page updated: March 18, 2016 This is one page of a series that I am writing on "traveling light", whether it be hiking in the wilderness or wandering the world by boat, bus, train or air. In this page I have itemised my "base load", which is everything that goes into my pack or on my person, apart from food and water. Clothing Only one set of clothes are needed, with something minimal to wear while washing the main set. Following recommendations of experienced hikers, I need f...| BarryK's Home
Page created June 16, 2019 This page has DIY plans for a solar water distiller. This will evaporate brackish or salty water and output pure distilled water. It is powered entirely from the sun, and is very simple to construct, using materials that are expected to be safe for drinking, and long-lasting. EDIT July 02, 2019: I decided to remove these plans, as not happy with the efficiency. Currently thinking about a new design with potentially higher water output. To read about progress, se...| BarryK's Home
Over the years, I have collected a few photovoltaic solar panels of 80W rating or greater, used in camping expeditions, as well as several small panels used for hiking. The prices have been declining, which is good news, and there are now lighter choices, which I appreciate. The objective of this page is to document the current setup as a "grey nomad", traveling by car, and often staying at remote campsites without 240V AC power. I need to be able to power fridge, TV, computer, lights, etc. F...| BarryK's Home
