Nine homes collapsed in Buxton and Rodanthe, North Carolina as water levels rose and storm waves reached shore from Hurricanes Imelda and Umberto. These homes were built decades ago. High rates of long-term chronic erosion put them, and many others, at risk. EMES Professor Laura Moore and her team are learning how coastal erosion and management decisions interact in counter-intuitive ways to shape the future of oceanfront communities. The Rodriguez Lab generally uses the principles of sedimentology and stratigraphy to examine the response of coastal depositional environments to sea-level rise, changes in storminess, and human impacts. We study all coastal environments from rivers to the inner continental shelf. Research is field based and we collect a variety of different types of data, including sedimentologic, radiometric, seismic, and remote sensing.| Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences

Scientists from EMES lead an international expedition aboard the research vessel R/V Marcus Langseth to study plankton dynamics in the Galápagos Marine Reserve. Working out of UNC’s Galapagos Science Center on San Cristobal Island, the NSF-funded expedition aimed to analyze … Read more| Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences
Each spring in North Carolina, nearly all eelgrass dies off — only to regrow from tiny, sesame-like seeds. While each square meter can produce tens of thousands of seeds, only a small number of them become new plants. This discrepancy … Read more| Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences
A UNC study mapped 78 flood events across roughly three-quarters of the state, revealing that more than 20,000 buildings sustained flooding on multiple occasions between 1996 and 2020. Helena Garcia, a doctoral student in Carolina’s Environment, Ecology and Energy Program, … Read more| Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences
On a clear summer morning, Colin Eimers drives a boat past the seemingly endless saltwater grass that populates North Carolina’s Pamlico Sound. Ahead, rows of glistening black cages bob on the water’s surface in long tidy rows. On a nearby … Read more| Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences
Federation Executive Director Braxton Davis presented one of the two Lifetime Achievement Awards this year to Dr. Hans Paerl, “For a Distinguished Career Dedicated to Coastal Research, Protection, and Restoration.” Paerl, who recently retired after 47 years, is a Kenan Professor of Marine Environmental Sciences at University of North Carolina Institute of Marine Sciences in Morehead City.
