Moving the feed from index.rss to index.xml After reading Google is killing the open web I started to style my RSS feed using XSLT. Unfortunately, web browsers won't open a file with the extension "rss", but just offer to download it. Therefor I have to rename my RSS feed. Old name: index.rss New name: index.xml The complete URL is: http://box.matto.nl/index.xml or https://box.matto.nl/index.xml For some time the RSS feed will be available on both the old and the new URL. Please replace the o...| Open source software and nice hardware

Elisping like it is 1998 GNU Emacs has been around for over forty years, and it has evolved tremendously during that period. Additional functionality was added, and new packages were created. Elisp also expanded with additional features. I maintain a phlog, this is like a blog, but on Gopher. See this explanation on Wikipedia. I write my phlog posts as Denote org files, and use a home-made Elisp script to convert the org-file to my phlog format, add the post to the gophermap, and build the RS...| Open source software and nice hardware

Switched to the EXWM window manager After about two decades using the ratpoison window manager, the original tiling window manager, I switched to the EXWM window manager on my laptops, running FreeBSD. EXWM EXWM (Emacs X Window Manager) is a full-featured tiling X window manager for Emacs. It is a tiling window manager that also supports floating windows, but I haven't used that. EXWM, like ratpoison, is controlled with the keyboard, no mouse interaction is necessary. Basic configuration With...| Open source software and nice hardware
Set up an alternative Emacs configuration Using Emacs traditionally results in the long-lasting cultivation of a personal configuration. To try out some alternative configuration, I usually create a playing field by setting up an extra, dedicated user-account on my system, using "su - " to enter the playground. Emacs 29 The release of Emacs 29 provides a better way to do this. The NEWS.29 file states: Emacs now supports setting 'user-emacs-directory' via '--init-directory'. We can use of this...| Open source software and nice hardware
This website is available without encryption, and yours should be too Over the last decade, the internet has seen a major roll out of encryption of the data transmission. Every website got a certificate and URLs suddenly started with "https". Encryption of the transmission protects against eavesdropping and provides a degree of trust that the party at the end of the connection is who we believe it is. For this, certificates are required, and encryption protocols must provide strong encryption...| Open source software and nice hardware
Blog Questions Challenge: Technology Edition I was tagged by Andreas for a new blog challenge, this time the so-called "Technology Edition". When Did You First Get Interested In Technology? I built my first electronics project when I was twelve years old. This was a crystal radio. It required very few components, but I still needed to save money for a while before I could afford the purchase. For the antenna I used a very long wire, probably 10 meter or longer. The reception was of course ter...| Open source software and nice hardware
