I know it's been beyond a hot minute since I've posted here! But I wanted to take the chance to invite my readers to join in on a prayer effort to Saint Joseph for our country and for the conversion of Joseph Biden.| Mary Haseltine
Hey friends! I'm popping in here to share with you a project I've been working on! | Mary Haseltine
Our Ben turned FIVE last week! I wish I could express what a joy this kid is. He is just so sweet natured and (most of the time) easy to get along with. He's started doing a tiny bit of reading lessons with me and has soaked up so much of his brothers' knowledge of science and history. It's kind of amazing. His favorite things are bread and butter, Rend Collective, bugs, music, listening to audiobooks, soft blankets, bedtime stories of Ralph the Monkey from Papa, and he has recently begun to ...| Mary Haseltine
Our new 11 year old has been waiting for his birthday for months. Because of all the coronavirus panic, he couldn't have friends over or the party he wanted. But I'm so proud of him that he didn't once complain in the weeks leading up to it that things were going to have to look much different than he desired. Not even when we awoke to snow on May 9 and faced a day of thirty degree temperatures...| Mary Haseltine
My oldest has been trying his hand at a bit of baking during this Easter of isolation and I am NOT complaining. I had strawberries on hand for some sort of Divine Mercy Sunday treat and he decided to attempt shortcake. It came out perfectly. We adapted the recipe from the one found in my trusty Better Homes and Gardens cookbook gifted me ages ago at a wedding shower (newer edition here). I only have 3 cookbooks and that one is a staple.| Mary Haseltine
He is risen! Happy Easter!| Mary Haseltine
It's been quiet here and for me in general on social media because big changes are happening for our family! After about two years of looking for the right-for-us home, we found a new place and in roughly two weeks we'll be packing a truck, closing on two houses, and moving. The last two months have been filled with the many, many, many details of buying and selling and prepping to move. Our current home has been filled with memories and has served us well but it has been clear to us that it ...| Mary Haseltine
How it has been a year since our littlest man was born is relieving and sad all at once. It hasn't been an easy year, I'll be honest. In fact, it's been one of the hardest. How many times I've cringed at the well meaners who say that it gets easier the more you have I've lost count. Our dear Lolek has been a high maintenance baby with little penchant for sleep. We love him to the moon but a combo of high needs, severe PPD/PPA, and a whole lot of other completely unrelated but heartwrenchingly...| Mary Haseltine
Happy FOURTH birthday to our sweet Benedict Raphael! You came into the world in your spectacularly quirky way and you haven't stopped being your silly sweet sensitive goofy self since. How grateful we are for our little Horton! Just a few quick shots from our little celebration:| Mary Haseltine
He's been planning this birthday for the past eleven months, declaring shortly after last year's Star Wars party that his tenth birthday would be dedicated to The Lord of the Rings. A long expected party, one could say. We've had a LOTR party before and also a Dwarven themed birthday so thankfully, that helped with some of the planning and details. It was pretty impressive how much work the older three all did to prepare. My job was mostly the behind the scenes logistics and the cake about wh...| Mary Haseltine
In the last few years, I've pretty much moved completely away from the talk radio I used to enjoy so much and that would often keep me company during the long days at home. With the explosion of podcasts, I love that I can now find shows that are more catered to what I'm interested in as well as more intelligent, entertaining, and informative. And there's so many great ones out there now! I wrote out some of my favorite priests that podcast in this post but wanted to share a list of some of m...| Mary Haseltine
Many years ago (when perhaps this lady had extra time and motivation and "only" four kids) a friend and I painted Passion ornaments together. This is one of those things that I'm glad I did when I could because I can't see it happening in this season! This is certainly an "extra" that isn't necessary for Lent but one that I just use as I can to deepen their understanding, especially of the littler ones. Each ornament is meant to commemorate a different element of Christ's Passion, teaching th...| Mary Haseltine
I don't share much about my kids online anymore but I do want to keep up the birthday post tradition, even the humbler ones! We celebrated our Michael's 12th birthday last month in what I kept naming a "stretchy" birthday. FYI, that's a mom's positive spin when she can't quite make a bigger celebration work and schedules and sickness determine that you've got to do several smaller get togethers stretched out over a few weeks ;) We were finally able to have his "real" cake just this past weeke...| Mary Haseltine
Ah, church with kiddos...HOW DO YOU DO IT? I don't claim to have all the answers but it's a question I've seen and received often enough that I thought I'd write out what works for us. And by works I do not mean perfection or raising fearful robot children, heh. I mean that I can confidently say our kids do reasonably well at Mass. Some of these things came instinctively but many more are things we've learned over time through lots of trial and error, tears (probably mostly mine) and victorie...| Mary Haseltine

I know, I know, gifts are not at all the meaning of Christmas. But this year, I have to say they were one of my favorite parts. It's now January fifth, ahem, eighth (a mere four days to finish this post), and I wanted to share a little about them because they just made me so happy. The day after Christmas the baby came down with a nasty cold that stretched on and on, poor little guy, and one by one, each of the kids went down with him. The severity seemed to lessen with age but it still p...| Mary Haseltine
In case you hadn't heard, the United States bishops were asked by the pope to gather for a week long retreat led by the preacher of the papal household. The retreat will take place from January 2-8. In the words of Father Cantalamessa the preacher, it is "to lead a series of spiritual exercises for the episcopal conference so that the bishops, far from their daily commitments, in a climate of prayer and silence and in a personal encounter with the Lord, can receive the strength and light of t...| Mary Haseltine
One of the traditions I'm so so grateful I started when my oldest was tiny is gifting personal ornaments each year. Every year at Christmas I give each of the kids and my husband a new ornament that somehow represents something from their year. As much as my personality and home decor taste normally cringes at any semblance of tchotchke or trinket, I see this as totally different. Maybe it's because they're reserved just for Christmas and they have a designated home on the tree (i.e. not clut...| Mary Haseltine
