Sagittaria latifolia is a perennial herb with an erect growth habit. The leaves are sheathing, and glabrous, and it is cosmopolitan in distribution, present throughout North America, northern Europe, and Asia. Wapato is a tuberous plant that can grow prolifically in immense, homogenous, wetland fields hundreds of acres in extent.
