Wild Dark Shore. I was hooked on this story after the first chapter. A woman, close to death by drowning and hyperthermia, washes up on the Arctic shore of a remote island. The woman, Rowan, is dragged up to the lighthouse and cared for by Dominic Salt and his three children. She has grave injuries requiring stitches where jagged rocks tore her body open.| 1toast.blogspot.com

This was my first time participating in Paris in July and I had a blast. While I thought I may do two posts I found myself immersed in the books, food and music. Check out our host Emma at Words and Peace for info and great suggestions. | Turn the Page

A Moveable Feast by Hemingway was the book for the Classic Club Spin. I had to get the photo of the book against this picture we have above the bar. It's perfect for the French theme :-) | Turn the Page

Food is my inspiration for this week in the Paris in July event hosted by Emma at Words and Peace. Palmiers were on my radar and that made me think about all the other recipes I have prepared from my Williams Sonoma Essentials of French Cooking.| Turn the Page

Here we are into the first week of July. We've had a few big storms blow in this past week and had hail one evening. The winds were so strong that day my wind chimes blew sideways and stayed vertical for a bit. I thought they may blow into my neighbor's yard, yikes. Welcome to the hurricane season and the almost daily summer rains.| Turn the Page
Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay was my spin pick for The Classics Club. I read the lenghty forward and it seems there was a question about the author's first hand knowledge, or is it entirely a work of fiction. It is labeled as historical fiction with a setting in 1900 at a girl's college in Victoria Australia. The locations Hanging Rock and Macedon ranges are real.| Turn the Page

This memoir starts with the author's early life and his distain for the educational system. At age twelve the school sorts the children between the grammar or comprehensive groups, those moving into grammar deemed intelligent enough for higher education and eventually professional careers. Those in comprehensive are destined for labor jobs such as bricklayers, hairdressers, farmers. The teacher tries to inspire the children to reach for more while the boys carry on and ignore her, dismiss h...| 1toast.blogspot.com

The end of May already....wow. Nothing new here except catching up on some emails and errands. We finished watching the series Firefly and I sure wish they had continued it. Next week is my birthday so we will get a pizza and watch The Martian that evening. Loki has been looking a bit unhappy about the lack of furniture in the house these days but that will all change soon.| Turn the Page
Rick Steves' travel books and shows are always informative and entertaining. This publication isn't a typical guide book. Actually, it's not a guide book at all. It's a memoir and diary of an amazing trip he and his friend endured when they were in their twenties.| Turn the Page

Brideshead Revisited was on my spin list for the Classics Club but I wasn't able to finish it in time. It was interesting n some parts but other parts I found it a slog. This would cause me distraction and I'd read something else. Hence my lengthy reading time with a 400+ page book.| Turn the Page
