Every so often, I'll have a discussion with a non-free-software person that ends up here:| www.terracrypt.net
This week, Google announced that it would start blocking the installation of Android apps unless the developer has registered themselves with Google.| www.terracrypt.net

Matrix has gotten a lot of bad publicity lately. Some of it I agree with, some of it I don't. And I've been around the Matrix community for long enough that I truly do believe that the Matrix team has good intentions, so I don't really want to add fuel to the fire.| www.terracrypt.net

There are two ecosystems out there in the decentralized social networking space these days. There's the Fediverse, built on top of the ActivityPub protocol, and there's now a parallel set of software popping up around Bluesky and the AT Protocol (or "ATProto"). The Fediverse now has PeerTube (a YouTube-like service), Pixelfed (like Instagram), and Loops (like TikTok). In the ATProto world, there are apps like Pinksky (like Instagram) and Skylight (like TikTok).| www.terracrypt.net
I got a little burst of inspiration recently and threw some rough experiments together over the course of a few evenings.| www.terracrypt.net
A couple updates on the gobs-of-machines work from a while back!| www.terracrypt.net
Have you ever actually convinced someone of something on social media? I think I may have, once or twice, but it's by far not the most common outcome.| Terracrypt
I've been noodling on the possibility of managing a bunch of Guix machines with Goblins for a little while now. Spent a little time at a local coffee shop today thinking about how this might work...| Terracrypt
Migrated the website back to a server I control so I can set the Content-Type header properly on ActivityPub objects. And it looks like that was enough for Mastodon to be able to pull up my profile!| Terracrypt
Taking a little break today from coding for an artistic break - I'm trying to turn an existing image into a vector design for an enamel pin. I think it came out pretty well!| Terracrypt
Same-day post I know, but I just managed to hack together per-tag page support for this site! I love that Haunt makes things like this so easy. Currently only the da2024 page exists, but I'll be generating pages for all of them soon.| Terracrypt
I heard about December Adventure today, and thought it was a great idea! Since I have a project in mind to work on at the moment (that I was working on yesterday anyway), I think I'll participate. :)| Terracrypt
I've decided to try out Bluesky again since it's gotten so much media attention lately. For some context, I've been off Twitter entirely since its rebrand to X, and I'd been slowly falling off of it prior to that since Musk bought it. We all knew it'd be on a downward slope at that point, and it's fallen far down that slope indeed.| Terracrypt
I've been a fan of Vienna Teng for quite a while now, which until recently has mostly meant listening to her backlog, because she's been on a musical hiatus for a while. But recently, she released a new single - or rather, a set of singles.| Terracrypt
This is my submission for the Malleable Systems Collective's "Fearless extensibility" challenge problem.| Terracrypt
I've been noodling on structural editing for a while now. I'm fully bought into Lisps myself, but most of my friends and coworkers are skeptical, and I think a lot of their skepticism has to do (as usual) with all the parens. One of the points I make frequently is that with Lisp code being written as a nested data structure, the textual representation is just one of many possible representations. But it can be hard to get across what that means without concrete examples.| Terracrypt

As with probably a lot of very ADHD people, I've gone through several attempts at maintaining a blog, most of which I've fallen off of relatively quickly. But I keep wanting to come back to it... so here's one more attempt at it.| Terracrypt
Phone manufacturers have promised convergence for years, but every attempt I've come across in the past has never quite satisfied me:| Terracrypt
So the big free software news of the week is that Amazon is forking Elasticsearch after Elastic relicensed Elasticsearch under the SSPL. The internet's in a frenzy about this, as tends to happen these days whenever a large previously free software project goes proprietary. I'm disappointed that the free software world has partly lost yet another useful piece of software, and glad that the project will at least live on in some form as free software, even if not from Elastic.| Terracrypt
Wrapping up December Adventure for this year and related to my last post, here's some early prototyping I did over the holidays of a machine management tool. After I posted the last post, I had a conversation with some of my friends in which it was difficult to convey exactly how this might work, so I'm writing this up partly to serve as an explainer for my thought process.| www.terracrypt.net
