As a mother raising a gifted child, living the excitement and the stress right alongside him, we are a SENG family ourselves. With over a decade of experience in college admissions counseling and as a former Harvard College interviewer, I’ve seen firsthand how overwhelming this journey can be, even for the most capable students and involved families.| SENG
Gifted children often exhibit more sensory sensitivity to their environment and react with heightened emotional and behavioral responses than do children of average intelligence. As I reflect on my own journey, one thread has remained constant: the deep need for safe spaces to process the relationship between my inner experience and the outer world.| SENG
Imagine being able to grasp complex quantum physics concepts while struggling to tie your shoelaces. Or having the ability to compose brilliant symphonies in your head but being unable to write them down due to dysgraphia. This is the reality for twice-exceptional (2e) children – children who are both intellectually gifted and face learning differences.| SENG - Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted
The journey of a 2e autistic teen is rarely a straight line. Their intellectual gifts might shine brightly in one area, while a specific learning difference creates significant hurdles in another. This asynchronous development is a key facet we must consider. It’s not enough to simply acknowledge their giftedness or solely focus on their challenges. We need to see the whole picture, recognizing the interplay between these seemingly disparate aspects of their being.| SENG
