Here's something that I, as a DM, don't quite know how to wrap my head around. It seems, however, to be a cornerstone of a particular type of play I surround myself with. I'd love to hear from other minds on it, to see if I can figure out how to make it work for me.| sunderedshillings.blogspot.com

This recent, brilliant (as usual) post of Phlox's references a setting's animating conflict. It's the first time I recall seeing it on a blog, though I could swear it was in the zeitgeist before then. This is proving an increasingly useful concept for me. If I had to define it, an animating conflict is a conflict so essential to a setting it's impossible to describe it without its mention, and that any arbitrary dungeon game problem might be plausibly blamed on- this is in the service of crea...| sunderedshillings.blogspot.com

FIELDS OF THE DEAD. Before CHARLEMAGNE’S civilizing age, a community’s dead would be buried under stone cairns and dolmens. These days, tomb robbers frequent these ruins of ancient graveyards for a quick mark.| Sundered Shields and Silver Shillings
AILMENTS. An AILMENT you contract takes a SLOT. Every UNDERTAKING and day spent TRAVELING, roll MIGHT for each AILMENT you’ve contracted. If you fail, that AILMENT takes another SLOT.| Sundered Shields and Silver Shillings

THE RULES| Sundered Shields and Silver Shillings
This adventure got lost in map-first hell. I had a bunch of cool ideas for it- a mushroom forest that was actually one vast psychic entity, a cult of Radon planning to sacrifice it and eating a face full of plague instead, blind raiders led by the mad Charlemagne Twice-Triumphant coming up from the Underdark. I stalled a whole dungeon's cross-hatching worth, but I couldn't turn my ideas into rooms and encounters. But the map is cool, and the drawings are cool, so maybe one of you could use it.| Sundered Shields and Silver Shillings

In dipping my toes back into RPG play and design, I found this old notebook I was using to run RBSDnD games for summer campers. I designed a number of short, contained adventures for this format (here’s one), but not many of them were written out in such a way as to be valuable to post without more rewriting than it was worth.| Sundered Shields and Silver Shillings

Towards “Sundering” Planescape. The project no longer grabs me, but I’ve been sitting on this draft too long, and put too much work into making it half-decent, so it’s time to give it its quiet, gentle release into its next stage of life.| Sundered Shields and Silver Shillings
Long ago, before the Quiet Conquest, before the Concord of Cor Ecclesiae, there was a shining road that spanned the length of the subcontinent. At one end, Cor Ecclesiae, the great cathedral, the beating heart at the center of what was then simply the Orthodoxy. At the other, the sagacious spires of Scholomance, tall and proud against the yet-virgin mountains. The daisy-chain crown of Sordheim, paved with pearls plucked from the heart of the sea, they say.| Sundered Shields and Silver Shillings
Here are some new rules, built off of RBSDnD, for an upcoming game I'm running in a more traditional fantasy style than Pb. Wrote this adventure for a very successful RBSDnD d6e game (which changed how combat and a couple of classes worked a tad); what you see is a messy expansion of my personal notes with the fucked-up horror dials set above where they were for my middle schoolers. It’s not my most polished adventure notation, but I think it serviceable enough to communicate the most important parts. Enjoy A High Fantasy!| Sundered Shields and Silver Shillings
Forgot my d20 at home these past couple of weeks at camp. Wrote up this d6-only variation on RBSDnD instead. Very similar to past iterations, just more accessible for those without d20 handy. Thanks for reading, and happy gaming.| Sundered Shields and Silver Shillings
