A blog about quilting and sewing.| threeowlshandmade.blogspot.com
I have received many questions on my @sid_and_sebastian Instagram account regarding Sid & Sebastian's cage construction, so I decided to draw up some diagrams for anyone interested in a similar setup.| Three Owls Handmade
Quilting is such a tool and supply intensive hobby and I don't have my own dedicated space. I have a small sewing corner in the game room/family office and storage is a massive problem for me. My supplies are sprinkled throughout the house, and a lot of my tools sit on my sewing table where they should theoretically be right at hand to use. The problem is that I am constantly battling piles and tossing them about in my space. When Sports Authority closed over the summer, I asked my daughter...| Three Owls Handmade
And now for my 2016 Weekender Sew Along big bag reveal. That Sarah Watts - she is one of my favorite designers. I used her fabric all over this bag, with a little bit of fellow Cotton + Steel designer Melody Miller thrown in.| Three Owls Handmade
Last week I posted my first blog post as part of the Sewlux and Happy Little Cottage Weekender Bag Sew Along.| Three Owls Handmade
There are so many blog posts out there about the Amy Butler Weekender Bag pattern. When I decided to make my first one two years ago, I was overwhelmed by all of the blog posts and finally just decided to work through modifications on my own. I am on my third bag joining up with the Weekender Bag Sew Along hosted by Sewlux and Happy Little Cottage, and I am trying some new techniques. Chrissy from Sewlux has a ton of really great tips on her blog and has made some stellar bags.| Three Owls Handmade
I'll never catch up on all the blog posts I have neglected to make in the past year, but I can give you a little snapshot of a few things. I guess I am coming to terms with who I am as a quilter right now and that is basically temperamental. I had an epiphany several months ago about how to describe my quilting philosophy. I shared it with Ellyn during Crafty Tuesday at her house some time ago and she said I should write a blog post. Well, I am finally doing it; I am apparently as temperamen...| Three Owls Handmade
This is a super quick and not super pretty how-to on using plain old Elmer's Glue Stick (washable) to temporary tack quilt binding down for machine quilting. I've seen tutorials on using Elmer's with a fine tip applicator, but I don't have that, so when I was trying to quickly bind my daughter's Meadow quilt in time for her birthday, I didn't want to fuss with Wonder Clips and missing bits on the back. So I grabbed the glue stick.| Three Owls Handmade
If you are interested in adding an inset zipper pocket to the exterior back or interior of your Everyday Hipster Bag (pattern available here), here are the pocket dimensions. I am not going to do a full tutorial on how to make an interior zipper pocket as there are so many out there. I really like this tutorial from U-Handbag.| Three Owls Handmade
I've been buried in house organization for the past several months and it has taken a hit to my creative energy, but I'm back to more sewing and less organizing. To be honest, it's starting to look like I didn't do much organizing which leads me to believe that it's a full time job around here. But either way, I am back to a creative place and have several ideas in the works.| Three Owls Handmade
After just under a year of stitching (and maybe a month of inactivity) E's diamond star quilt is done, washed and crinkly. So many stitches, so many fussy cuts. Additional in progress photos can be found in my previous blog post here. | Three Owls Handmade
A couple of years ago my daughter made some round fabric covered magnets with my scraps. Sometimes I have a hard time letting go of little odd scraps of beloved fabric, so for part of my "leave no fabric scrap behind" project this year, I decided to clean out some small and cut sections of scraps by making an applique circle mini using the same cutting method that we used for the scraps. It's a bit of an odd method, but it worked out well, and it was a great on-the-go and TV project.| Three Owls Handmade
I recently participated in a small swap with some sewing friends. Stalking my recipients Pinterest board revealed a whole new world of miniature quilt shop supplies. She has a dollhouse, so I decided to make her some bundles. I looked around at various blogs for tutorials. I found several for fabric bolts and fat quarter bundles, but I wanted to make a few adjustments to size/fold. I tried to stay as close to 1:12 ratio as possible. While I saw pictures of super adorable miniature jelly rolls...| Three Owls Handmade
In March I wrapped up a lap size 2" hexie EPP quilt; I am pretty sure I neglected to blog pics of the finished quilt, so maybe I will get around to doing that soon. I felt a bit lost, and so I started sewing some 2" 60 point diamonds in Elea Lutz Milk, Sugar, and Flower. I quickly realized that a mini wasn't going to be big enough to satisfy my enthusiasm, and so I resigned myself to making a twin size quilt for my youngest daughter.| Three Owls Handmade
My sewing space consists of a small corner of our multipurpose game room. Even so, my little corner of mini quilts has been a slow, evolving work in progress. I have a lot of mini quilts from various quilting friends and swaps, and a few minis I have made as well.| Three Owls Handmade
A couple of years ago, before I bought my RASKOG cart from IKEA, I made a mini pressing board from a scrap piece of wood in the garage, with a removable, washable cover to use while piecing quilt blocks. After I bought the RASKOG, I learned that my pressing board is the perfect size to fit on top of my RASKOG and create more functional space in my small sewing area. I use both all the time, but for the past several months, my cover has been scorched and ugly. I knew it was time to make a new ...| Three Owls Handmade
Earlier this summer, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to test Aneela Hoey's new Project Caddy Pattern. Aneela writes very clear and detailed patterns with great design, and this pattern is no exception; I love the lid construction and zipper installation. So clever. This caddy was the perfect size for my college age daughter to take on her beach vacation to tote essentials.| Three Owls Handmade
Recently, I had the opportunity to test a fun new EPP hand sewing pattern called The Hexie Box by Amber Crawley. Amber asked me to test the large 7" box, and I knew it was the perfect project to use some of my stashed Sweet as Honey fabric.| Three Owls Handmade
I'm very excited to announce the release of my new Pouch with a View pattern. It's been a whirlwind week of samples and testing! Take a peek here at the pouches my friend Ellyn tested and made in about 18 hours, including one with a teeny, tiny pieced hexies WIP she had on hand.| Three Owls Handmade
I drafted a pattern for a holiday pillow swap a while back, and I added extra pattern pieces which can be substituted to make the pattern with a year round theme. The Vintage Candy Cottage pattern was once available to purchase on Craftsy, but I now have it available on Payhip. I dusted off my pattern this month to make a pillow for a friend. I used some of my favorite Tasha Noel fabric for the house and border, and quilted with 1/2" diagonal crosshatching and Miss Kate red and white scallo...| Three Owls Handmade
I am excited to participate in the Shabby Fabric 2015 Blogger Challenge. This blogger challenge highlights the versatility of the pre-fused laser cut Shabby Shapes. You can see the whole selection of available shapes here. For my mini quilt, I selected a set of small 2" butterfly prints and a set of small pindot tulips. I've included instructions with how I made this mini quilt, but it is really more of an improve piece.| Three Owls Handmade
I posted last month about the rainbow (plus pink) mini quilt I was working on, using 1/2" hexies. I haven't been sewing as much this year as I try to reclaim an organized craft and home space, but I managed to finish the quilt a couple of weeks ago.I am so happy with this little quilt. It finished at approximately 10" x 12", which is the perfect size for the wall in my little sewing corner. | Three Owls Handmade
People sometimes say that the youngest child is the one to get all the hand me downs and to have the baby book without any entries. With the big age gap between my children, that isn't really the case for our family. I sew a lot more than I did when my older girls were younger, and I am now a stay at home mom with all the kids in school (the oldest is in college). This means that everyone has more handmade by mom, and that we finally have a tooth fairy pillow in the house rather than a little...| Three Owls Handmade
The first finish of 2015 is a little Bonnie and Camille Vintage Modern HST mini that was largely complete in December. I had to set the top aside for a few weeks to focus on holiday sewing, and to focus on organizing the closets (a task that has taken far too long).| Three Owls Handmade
This year, I am committed to organizing my home and fabric stash, and more importantly, staying on top of it. I know there are people who diligently cut scraps into usable pieces and then put them away in color coded bins. I am not one of those people. I fill a waste bin behind my sewing table as I sew, and when it is full, I stuff the fabric into one of many closet drawers designated for scraps, and then I dig through the drawers when I have a project in mind.| Three Owls Handmade
