Raising chickens doesn't have to be difficult! I'll teach you about raising backyard chickens for eggs. Saving money raising ducks & guinea fowl too!| Murano Chicken Farm
If you're an American you're used to eggs being sold in the refrigerated cases at the grocery store. If you ever go to another country you'll see that's not very common anywhere else! They actually display eggs on the regular grocery store shelves.| Murano Chicken Farm
Some of the questions I get asked the most are about having roosters and eggs. People always want to know if I have roosters and can hens lay eggs without them? I really do understand not wanting roosters, they're loud and sometimes mean. They're also unnecessary if all you want your hens for is to produce eating eggs.| Murano Chicken Farm
When a flock of laying hens gets older, they don't lay eggs as often. Around the time they are 2 years old, most hens stop laying the 6 eggs a week they were producing up till now and the amount they lay will decline each year. They usually drop down to 1 or 2 eggs a week by 6 years old.| Murano Chicken Farm
A few weeks ago I saw something on tick tock that did not sounded interesting to me. Somebody was claiming that if you put a little bit of beet juice in your chicken's waterer, that it wouldn't freeze in winter! Now I found this pretty hard to believe and actually reached out to ask questions but never got any answers. | Murano Chicken Farm
The last few weeks here in Pennsylvania we have been dealing with a massive amount of June bugs. My chicken's couldn't be happier. I started noticing it when I left a bucket outside overnight. It had a bit of water in it and it just happened to be on the ground under the garage door light. In the morning it was full of June bugs!| Murano Chicken Farm
Somebody recently asked me if their chicken run needed a roof and I realized I hadn't really talked about this very much. Today I want to talk about run roofs, if you need one and the different types of materials they can be made with.| Murano Chicken Farm
When talking about saving money with chickens, most everyone discusses how to cut your chicken keeping costs. I do it quite often actually. Today though I want to talk about how keeping chickens saves you money in your home or homestead. | Murano Chicken Farm
Today I'm going to do something completely new for me... I'm going to talk about something I just started doing! I learned how to salt cure egg yolks a few months back and they are amazing! They're super simple to do and you really need to try it!| Murano Chicken Farm
A chicken coop doesn't need very much for the chickens to be happy. Some windows, a few nest boxes, perches and a place for their food & water and they will be perfectly content! However, adding some decorations or storage can make the coop more useable for you. Over the years I've repurposed a bunch of different household items to my chicken coops.| Murano Chicken Farm
I may have several chicken coops but not all of them have names. Why, you ask? Well, I couldn't find anything that fit for 2 of them! So they shall remain nameless until I decide on something I think is fun enough to say everyday and fits the esthetic of said coop. I mean, naming your chicken coop should be as fun as raising chickens themselves!| Murano Chicken Farm
Anybody that has raised a mixed flock of chickens will tell you that the roosters can be quite a problem for the hens some times! It's kind of an art to get your ratio of roosters to hens just perfect. Too many roosters and they're rough on the hens & they fight, but too few roosters and not all the eggs will be fertilized.| Murano Chicken Farm
A few years back I was helping Brinsea incubators with their displays and demonstrations at the Mother Earth News fair when it was in Pennsylvania. I had the eggs all ready to hatch but the one problem was that most of them were brown! When demonstrating candling eggs and incubation equipment you can see inside the egg most easily if it's white or cream colored. The darker the shell the harder it is to see inside.| Murano Chicken Farm
Ducklings are one of the cutest baby animals in existence! I have been raising ducks since 2009 and have had both standard size, large and bantamn ducks! I started hatching duck eggs as soon as I got my first incubator. Actually my first duck was a pekin egg that was added into my marans eggs shipment as a surprise extra egg. I named him Quackers!| Murano Chicken Farm
I've been raising chickens here since 2010 and we've only had 2 major predator attacks and they were both dogs. Yes, we've had our share of persistent foxes or raccoons over the years, but dogs take the prize for the sheer amount of casualties they cause in one go.| Murano Chicken Farm
I was browsing Pinterest a few months back and saw a 'recipe' for Summer frozen yogurt treats for kids. I was intrigued so I read the whole post and it sounded exactly like something my chickens would love! They act like little kids most of the time so I'm pretty sure they'll like kid snacks!| Murano Chicken Farm
Hens do not need a rooster to lay eggs. In fact, almost every egg on the grocery store shelves was laid by a hen that did not have access to a rooster! It just doesn't make financial sense for commercial egg laying flocks to have a rooster since the hens are usually all caged.| Murano Chicken Farm
I was recently chatting with some people about guinea fowl and one of them mentioned that she was thinking about getting guineas instead of chickens because they don't need a coop. This is the first I had ever heard of Guinea's not having a coop to live in.| Murano Chicken Farm
This year I wanted to do another Easter egg decorating craft with brown eggs. The majority of egg laying hens in private homes throughout the country are brown egg layers. That coupled with the new popularity/availability of brown eggs and grocery stores means that a lot of us might be trying to decorate brown eggs for the first time this year.| Murano Chicken Farm
When I started raising chickens one of the first breeds I picked was the Polish chicken. I had decided to hatch the eggs myself and found a breeder online that shipped eggs. I hatched a few pure Polish and a few mixed with something else. I had those chickens for about a year before I completely gave up on that breed! Not gonna lie, they were kinda crazy!| Murano Chicken Farm
Have you ever had a period of time when everything seems to go wrong with your flock of chickens and you just can't seem to fix it? That was my whole summer! It started with predators but many of the things that went wrong were just weird flukes! Sometimes even when you do everything right, things still go wrong.| Murano Chicken Farm
Last week a friend asked me to stop over and take a look at one of her hens. The poor thing had a full crop and it didn't seem to be going down overnight. Also, my friend told me the chicken had bad breath! Chickens don't really get bad breath so I knew there had to be something wrong with her crop and went over to take a look. Turns out her hen had sour crop. | Murano Chicken Farm
Years ago I used to write a weekly series of chicken & egg jokes, cartoons and funny stories called Friday Funnies. I would publish old jokes i knew, ones readers would send me etc. At the time blogs were more like online diaries, unlike today when they're more like information banks.| Murano Chicken Farm
I have mentioned a time or two how much I loved rising the chicken breed Golden Comet. Since they are such a great breed, I decided it's time they get their own post! These hens are well known for their ability to start laying at around 4 months and lay an egg almost every day for several years! | Murano Chicken Farm
Chicken keeping has exploded in popularity lately It seems like everybody knows somebody who's raising backyard chickens for eggs! Most people are content to just have a few chickens, enjoy their eggs and that's it. Of course there's those of us that take it to extreme. Enter the crazy chicken lady! | Murano Chicken Farm

Silkie hens love to hatch eggs and will hatch anything you put under her, including guinea eggs. Silkies are excellent mothers and guinea hens are horrible mothers, so it just makes sense to let the silkies raise the guinea keets. Plus, it's adorable! Click to see...| Murano Chicken Farm
