I have presented how I intend to position EasyOS going forward, as somewhat like a traditional Puppy Linux, in some regards anyway. One of those traditional features is to stay with X11, not migrate to Wayland. The people in control of the git repositories for Xorg/X11 seem to be deprecating it, and pushing for Wayland. It seems that they don't want further development of X11 and this has resulted in it being forked. One guy has done this, and I wondered what has become of his fork... Today I...| Barrys News
To setup an application to run non-root, that is, as its own user, for example SeaMonkey to run as user "seamonkey", the script /usr/local/clients/setup-client is called. I have completely rewritten that script, reducing it from 1,171 lines down to just 303 lines. The script had grown over time and become very messy. Now it is very simple. What prompted this rewrite, is I want to change SeaMonkey to run non-root. SeaMonkey is builtin to EasyOS 7.x, but runs as the root user. For security, wan...| Barrys News
I was testing the German (de) keyboard layout, and thought that I had gone back to US layout, which is my actual keyboard. At next bootup, my password was wrong, and I couldn't figure out why. Then of course, the penny dropped, was still on the German keyboard layout. Which lead to the thought, it would be good to be able to toggle the display of the password to show the actual password, not star characters. So have implemented it. The 'init' script in the initrd has this: SHOWpw=0 #20251028 ...| Barrys News

We are discussing a problem with the Xorg evdev driver not so good for a mouse: https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=15866 There is also mouse misbehaviour with Chrome and Chromium from version 140.x onward, as reported here: https://issues.chromium.org/issues/445495197 We have a Xorg config file, that dates right back to the Puppy days, that assigns the evdev driver to everything; /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev-puppy.conf What I have now done is remove it, or rather, renamed to '10-ev...| Barrys News
Forum member IOwt3ch posted about a deb package that works in Easy Excalibur: https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?p=158146#p158146 IOwt3ch is interested in remastering, to produce a custom EasyOS drive-image file; however, Easy no longer has remastering tools. Instead, I recommend to use woofQ2, which gives very precise control of building your own EasyOS -- you could even give it a different name. I have added the capability to build with local debs. The woofQ2 tarball now has woofq2/...| Barrys News
When running in RAM, you can click on the "save" desktop icon and click the "Save Session" button to save the session immediately. Normally, you would be asked at shutdown. The problem with doing an immediate save, is that it can't actually happen immediately, as the permanent storage, /mnt/wkg/.session, (actually, now /mnt/wkg/.session/session1) is mounted as a read-only layer in overlayfs. It cannot be written to. The workaround was to save it to an intermediate folder, /mnt/wkg/.session-tr...| Barrys News
