Current AI discourse doesn't talk about human meaning-making — subjective decisions about value that AI systems can't make, which are nonetheless crucial for building and using AI systems.| uncertaintymindset.substack.com
Conventional conferences with fixed speakers, tracks, and panels are like trains. To stimulate new practical thinking in emergent areas, a conference needs to be like a hot-air balloon: able to drift a little and explore while still being steerable in real-time. A hot-air balloon conference creates and maintains a space for productive uncertainty. I derive some learnings about this type of unconventional conference from a recent AI conference in Singapore.| uncertaintymindset.substack.com
Getting useful answers depends on asking good questions, and foundationality is a key criterion in determining whether a question is “good.” A question is more foundational when its answer affects more other questions. This is why breakthroughs are more likely when we spend the time and effort to figure out how to articulate a question in a way that is more foundational.| uncertaintymindset.substack.com
Well-framed problems are good strategies for coordinating innovative action across diverse and unexpected domains. What does "well-framed" mean? A well-framed problem balances between freedom (defining the problem broadly to increase the number of possible solutions) and useful constraint (being usefully clear about un/acceptable tradeoffs potential solutions are allowed to make).| uncertaintymindset.substack.com
This issue is about design principles for good, viably sneaky experiments. Good experiments are an appropriate way to act when faced with both uncertainty and an uncertainty-averse organization. At a minimum, a good experiment must have a hypothesis about a mechanism that the experiment will investigate, an actionable insight if the hypothesis is supported, and an actionable insight even if the hypothesis is not supported. A good experiment can be made easier for an uncertainty-averse organiz...| uncertaintymindset.substack.com

This issue introduces not-knowing as a concept and argues for why we should care about it especially at this time in history. It's the opener for a book project and a monthly discussion series on InterIntellect about not-knowing that starts next Thursday (19 Jan 2023, 8pm CET).| uncertaintymindset.substack.com
