Letter from the Executive Director| Global Catastrophic Risk Institute
In January, GCRI put out an open call for people interested in seeking our advice or collaborating on projects with us. This was a continuation of last year’s successful advising and collaboration program. We anticipate conducting a second round of the program later in 2020. The 2020 programs are made possible by generous support from Gordon Irlam.| Global Catastrophic Risk Institute
In May, GCRI put out an open call for people interested in seeking our advice and/or collaborating with us on projects. This was a new initiative for us, enabled by funding we received last year. It was also a bit of an experiment: we did not know how much interest there would be, or how constructive it would be either for the advisees/collaborators or for us. | Global Catastrophic Risk Institute
GCRI runs a recurring Advising and Collaboration Program in which we connect with people at all career points who are interested in getting more involved in global catastrophic risk. Through that program, I have had the privilege of speaking with many people to share my experience in the field and help them find opportunities to advance their careers in global catastrophic risk. It has been an enriching experience, and I thank all of our program participants.| Global Catastrophic Risk Institute
Supporting the community of people concerned about global catastrophic risk is one of GCRI’s primary goals. Global catastrophic risk is a complex, multifaceted issue that benefits from the involvement of a diverse group of people with different backgrounds, experiences, and areas of expertise. We aim to foster an interconnected, international community of people working together to reduce the risk of global catastrophe.| Global Catastrophic Risk Institute

View the paper “On the Intrinsic Value of Diversity” Diversity is an important ethical concept. It’s also relevant to global catastrophic risk in at least two ways: the risk of catastrophic biodiversity loss and the need for diversity among people working on global catastrophic risk. It’s additionally relevant to scenarios involving extreme good, such as in well-designed advanced AI. However, the ethics of diversity has been remarkably understudied. To help address the full range of i...| Global Catastrophic Risk Institute

The field of global catastrophic risk has been jolted by the recent collapse of the cryptocurrency company FTX. Its philanthropic arm, the FTX Future Fund, was, for a brief stretch of time, a major funder of work on global catastrophic risk and related topics. Some projects related to global catastrophic risk were also funded directly by FTX co-founder and former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried.| Global Catastrophic Risk Institute
