St. Gregory the Great was the pope, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, from 590 to 604. He is considered the founder of the medieval papacy, which exercised both secular and spiritual power. Both a writer and a reformer, he was the fourth and final of the traditional Latin Fathers of the Church and expounded a sacramental spirituality.
