Train travel is often considered an environmentally-friendly alternative to other transit modes; however, the United States rail network is primarily served by diesel locomotives. Amtrak is currently rolling out newer locomotives that drastically reduce pollutant (nitrogen oxide, particulate matter) emissions. In this work, we use OSM rail shapefiles and speed limit attributes to investigate the impact of these upgraded locomotives on regional air quality in the United States.
