When the Department of Transportation (DOT) announced it would end the antitrust immunity (ATI) given to Delta and Aeromexico for their joint venture due to the Mexican government failing to honor the open skies agreement, it was never a doubt that Delta would angrily counter. The response was filed last week, and — spoiler alert — Delta is pissed off. And — another spoiler alert — Allegiant agrees with Delta.| Cranky Flier
This is admittedly a very strange headline. Why would Allegiant — an airline that not only doesn’t fly to México but also flies no cargo aircraft — get caught in a fight between the US and México over said air cargo? It’s a complex tale, but the short version is this. México is making changes that others don’t like, and the US has had enough. Because of this, Allegiant’s proposed joint venture with Viva Aerobus has been put on hold.| Cranky Flier
I did not have this one on my bingo card. Ultra low cost carriers Allegiant and Viva Aerobus will be teaming up, and not just for some janky, limited codeshare. They are forming a true, metal-neutral joint venture to cover travel between the US and Mexico, if the governments allow it. The airlines say this is a clear winning proposition in their regulatory filing, and for travelers, that’s certainly true. But is it worth it for the airlines?| Cranky Flier

Lufthansa Group (LHG) has never been the model of efficiency, which is rather shocking since that’s exactly what you’d expect from a Germany company. United has really been putting the hard sell on consumers about just how great Newark is lately. I get it. The stage was set back in March when Allegiant decided to close its crew base at LAX. The Department of Transportation (DOT) has released Q2 2025 financial statements, so this is our first chance to look at private airlines that don’t have to publicly release results on their own. Avelo was near the top of my list of airlines that might end up making this year’s “Airlines We Lost” post, but now, that’s no longer the case. After a very dicey first quarter, the airline has turned in better results. It has also raised cash, and it is now buying a fleet of 50...| Cranky Flier

Spirit was born in Detroit, but it earned its ultra low-cost carrier wings in Florida. The Department of Transportation (DOT) in late April finalized rules requiring airlines to automatically issue refunds if there’s a disruption and no acceptable alternative exists. It sounds great in theory, but as airlines put it into effect this week, we find there is a dark side to this change. Several airlines are using this ruling to their full advantage and are now denying refunds to a slew of travelers who would have previously qualified for one.| Cranky Flier

Nobody should be surprised to hear that Spirit has once again filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection — unless the surprise was that it wasn’t a Chapter 7 liquidation. In a bold pronouncement, Frontier has come out saying that it “commits to being the #1 low fare carrier in the Top 20 U.S. metros.” This is highly unlikely to ever happen, but let’s be honest here. Southwest extended its schedule from early March to early April last week. Sure it included a new city — Knoxville — but the real news was buried in the weeds. The roller coaster ride that has defined Spirit over the last five years appears to be coming to an end. Northwest Airlines was an absolutely ruthless competitor, and I mean that in the best way. I know we’re well into Q2 earnings season, but I’m gonna go back a quarter one more time. I’ll admit it. I was kind of lazy. Nobody can be surprised to hear that the US government is getting tough on Mexico. After all, we live in an “America First” kind of world these days, for better or worse. The problem with this kind of dogmatic stance, however, is that if followed too rigidly, it can punish the wrong people. And that is what is happening here now that the US has decided to end antitrust immunity for current joint venture partners Aeromexico and Delta. This also suggests the Allegiant/Viva joint venture ...| Cranky Flier
While I was gone on vacation, the first quarter DB1B data came out from government, so we can finally get a more granular look at what happened to the industry’s revenue at the beginning of this year. United and JetBlue carefully crafted their Blue Sky partnership to avoid any regulatory concerns. The airlines aren’t codesharing, there is no pricing or schedule coordination, and in general, they’ve followed the guidance that the judge who shot down the Northeast Alliance (NEA) between American and JetBlue gave on how to construct a legal partnership. Piedmont has long seemed like an airline living on borrowed time. For years it was the airline flying the smallest and least desirable fleets. I am always fascinated by New York’s JFK International Airport. It’s one of the rare examples in the US — the only example? — that has multiple private operators running different terminals. And in the past, that has made for some very strange bedfellows. But the airport’s $19 billion plan to remake itself is finally showing how most airline locations are starting to fall into place. The recent addition of United to Terminal 6 as part of its JetBlue deal just cements it even further.| Cranky Flier

When Alaska announced that its first European route would be from Seattle to Rome/FCO next summer, there was some head-scratching all around. This is an airline that’s a member of oneworld. The only real reason that could be gleaned was that CEO Ben Minicucci was thrilled to be able to call his Italian mother to tell her that Rome was coming.| Cranky Flier

So, I had to scramble to find an alternative. While I was doing that, I found something that you’ve all been asking about for ages… the ability to edit.| Cranky Flier
The worst-kept secret in the industry finally became officialy last week when United and JetBlue announced the launch of their Blue Sky partnership. The headlines were about what I expected, but there were some interesting nuggest buried in the release. I spoke with JetBlue President Marty St George to get the story.| crankyflier.com
I’ve long had an unhealthy fascination with airline schedule change policies. I think it’s because they tend to reflect the personality of the airline itself in funny ways. But ever since the Department of Transportation pushed through new rules on refunds, Delta’s policy has stood out for being the complete and total opposite of what people think when they fly Delta. It is unfair to the traveler, and I imagine that this will drive up volume to the call center where a sympathetic age...| Cranky Flier
Southwest was a news machine last week. After posting a bad quarter with an even worse outlook, it announced redeyes and most importantly, the introduction of assigned seating along with an extra legroom section. This is all good — well, except for the current results and outlook — but we still don’t know much about how this is going to be implemented. Let’s talk about that.| Cranky Flier
On July 19, the world learned the name CrowdStrike. That day, the company had uploaded a corrupted update to its clients’ computers that use the Windows operating system, and those computers immediately turned into bricks. This instantly made CrowdStrike the villain of every news article, but as the days went on, it was Delta that took over that role. Now, as Delta’s operations have returned to normal, we can look back and see… what a terrible job this airline did navigating the crisis....| Cranky Flier
It’s been talked about for eons, and now, it is actually happening. Southwest is going to start its first redeyes on February 13 with an arrival on Valentine’s Day in the first five markets. I spoke with COO Andrew Watterson to learn more about the airline’s plan.| Cranky Flier
As we discussed yesterday, in the long-haul market, premium upsell options have long been part of the game, but in the short-haul market, that has not been the case. It wasn’t all that long ago that airlines almost exclusively sold coach seats. Most of those people sitting in First Class were upgrades. This has changed dramatically, and the announcements of expanded premium offerings just keep coming.| Cranky Flier
The announcements seem to be coming fast and furious. Coming out of the pandemic, people have shown a rapidly-increasing willigness to pay up for more comfort and a better experience on airplanes. This is nothing new in the world of long-haul flying, but on shorter hauls, it is quickly creating the “haves” and the “have-nots.” Now it’s the latter group that is trying to play catch-up.| Cranky Flier
Alaska announced its Q2 earnings yesterday, and the results were predictably very good. The airline beat estimates and came through with a 15.8 percent margin while running a solid operation. Sure, Q3 guidance was softer, but it has been for everybody and there’s some noise in there anyway. The reality is that Alaska just continues to do well… most of the time.| Cranky Flier
There is much to be written on what has happened to the ultra low-cost carriers in a post-pandemic world. We will probably see some not-so-great results when Frontier and Spirit report Q2 numbers soon. While we all know that United CEO Scott Kirby has said their days are numbered, it is far more nuanced than that. We are working on an episode of The Air Show which will go deeper into this, but today, I just want to focus on one issue: route overlap.| Cranky Flier
As I mentioned in my trip report last week, I flew into SFO on a recent trip to the Bay Area but back out of Oakland. This wasn’t by design, but since I knew they were both pretty easy options from the city, I felt comfortable choosing the best flight times/prices out of either airport. Once we settled on going into one and out of the other, I knew it would be worth a comparison post. Let’s get it on.| Cranky Flier
My wife and I had to do a quick trip up to San Francisco for a Saturday night event. Fares were high, and schedule options were fewer than I’d expected. In the end, the best flights involved flying into San Francisco and out of Oakland. This gave me a great opportunity to compare the commute, but I’ll do that on Monday. For now, let’s talk about the somewhat unimpressive flight experiences themselves.| Cranky Flier
The federal government has been hemming and hawing for a long time, and now it appears poised to take action. Specifically, I’m talking about the Part 135/380 loophole that has allowed companies like JSX, Aero, and Contour to flourish. This may sound like bad news for those airlines, and for some it will be. But this isn’t as straightforward as it may seem.| Cranky Flier

The news that activist investor Elliott has taken a greater than 10 percent stake in Southwest Airlines has been the talk of the town this week. The more discussions I’ve had with people about this — and there have been so many — the more I’m convinced that the cynical take on this whole thing is the right one. Elliott is not here to actually fix Southwest.| Cranky Flier
There is no LUV for Southwest Airlines management this week as activist investor Elliott has taken more than a 10 percent stake in the airline and wants to fire Chairman Gary Kelly and CEO Bob Jordan. If you thought Carl Icahn’s investment in JetBlue was going to be a big fight, you ain’t seen nothing yet. This is going to get ugly. So far, I am not impressed by Elliott’s take, but if this does push Southwest to act more quickly, then everyone wins.| Cranky Flier
