This encounter definitely isn't for everyone, and that's okay. It introduces elements of science fiction into the campaign, which might work in a setting that trends more gonzo or isn't afraid to mix genres, but would probably be about as jarring as a brick to the face in a campaign with a more mythic or purely fantastic tone. But the beauty of D&D, as I've outlined before, is that it can do both - and my recent discussions on sci-fi put it in my head. This isn't an encounter I would use in m...| Tales of the Lunar Lands

This is a decent siege encounter that can be placed basically anywhere as long as you have a wall-encosed location with few soldiers except the PCs. As written, it was prompted by a chance encounter with a Kvaner host when returning to the place that is now the PCs base of operations - hence the strong assumptions about timing and intent. In most other cases, you shouldn't preclude the options of parlaying, surrendering, etc. However, you can probably still use this encounter as a blueprint f...| Triple Suns

Here are three lantern knights, supposed to the mini-bosses in my campaign. Like dragon-hauted Cabour the format is inspired by wisdom from a lot of other sources - such as "paragon creatures" - in hope of making solo monsters that can pose a challenge to a group of players. They are not playtested, so whether it works or not I do not know.| Triple Suns
A ruined city, shrouded in mist from the dragon's nauseating breath. You have come here to find a relic, lost when its bearer fled from the terrible dragon. Years have passed since the ancient creature last was seen, but you know it remains here. Biding time. Waiting.| Triple Suns

Things to encounter in the horrible wilderness. Inspired by Goblin Punch, who is always a source of inspiration. | Triple Suns
The road through the waterlogged forest curves slightly, yielding to a small cliff. A solitary tree in the bend towers high above the surrounding shrubbery. Dangling from its branches is a hanged knight, the toes of his sabatons just out of reach for a person standing underneath. You enter in the low-right corner.| Triple Suns

Deep in the wilderness are three towers, slowly sinking into the bog. Once, this was the site of a great battle, for the dark waters are full with mummified soldiers of a bygone age and their treasure gleams below the surface like hidden suns. Three witches live here - sisters in souls, one in each tower - feeding on children lured into the bog. Such gruesome deed can only be countered by another, and now you have come here to end them.| Triple Suns

1 Crucifixion Field. A hundred of old wooden crosses, some standing Ts, others like spokes of a wheel attached to trees, yet others leaning against another or lying crashed to the ground. Yellow bones and torn cloth covers the soil, or sit stuck like grisly trophies on the ash-gray frames.| Triple Suns
This encounter could be used in a dungeon, at a site in the wilderness, or maybe even in a town - preferably in some run-down house tucked away in a dark alley out of sight. You may want to plant rumors in the surrounding areas of strange robed figures gathering and chanting heard in the vicinity if you wish to lead your players to investigate.| Tales of the Lunar Lands

Here's a simple two-room puzzle designed to be slotted into a larger dungeon. This one is based on Archimedes's principle that an object displaces water equal to its mass, and attempts to simplify these physics for the sake of gameplay. Keep in mind that the intended solution to this puzzle may not be obvious unless your players are familiar with the theorem, although there are alternative solutions as well.| Tales of the Lunar Lands
This encounter is designed to challenge your players' expectations of morality and social expectations in a setting that may have different worldviews from their own. In that way, it's well-suited to a non-Flintstonist campaign, as a way to introduce players to the concept that people in a medieval fantasy world might see things differently than they see things today - especially with players who are new to the idea of leaving their preconceived notions at the door when approaching the camp...| Tales of the Lunar Lands

I have been thinking about two wildly different shows: Mrs. Davis (a stage magician hunting nun / mystic from Reno, Nevada) and Scavengers Reign (space colonists get marooned on a planet with a mysterious and infinitely complex ecology). Yesterday, I introduced the concept of monster Motivations as a way to help understand how to use that monster when designing encounters, or what they might be working toward when encountered as wandering monsters. But motivation only explains what the monster wants. Disposition, on the other hand, is a way to help understand the general attitude of the monster, and how they interact with others. This again is because alignment alone (even dual axis alignment) doesn't really help a DM in know...| Save Vs. Dragon
On the whole, I find that alignment alone (even dual axis alignment) doesn't really help a DM in knowing how to play a monster during encounters. To that end, as part of the Expanded Creature Cache stat block, I'm playing around with the ideas of "Motivation" and "Disposition." Then, in combination with the classic Monster Manual stats (like Intelligence), you start to get a better idea of how to play the monster.| Save Vs. Dragon
